used when she was creating mystery stories.

She’d first gotten interested in the chalice when Storm landed the VanDenbergh

murder as her first homicide case. It wasn’t only that the artifact was insured for five

million and still missing that had attracted Sophie’s attention and fired her imagination.

It was the fact VanDenbergh had actually believed drinking from a cup said to have

been created to induce orgies would have a Viagra-type effect on him. The six women

waiting for him in his orgy room were a testament to how thoroughly he believed in the

magic of the cup.

Sex and murder were great bedfellows when it came to writing a story. Then add a

second legend over the first—namely that the Chalice of Eros was really the Chalice of

Enos and had been created by a wizard who used it to bring the dragons to their knees—

and it got even better.

Sophie’s mind hummed with possibilities. She wondered if Severn would tell her

about the dragon societies, because that’s what he had to be a member of. That’s what

they all had to be members of. Secret societies though she couldn’t imagine what they

were after except maybe who could collect the most dragon artwork.

It was probably something they were all born into. That would explain why Severn

and Hakon and Malik had been more like friendly adversaries instead of deadly rivals.

It would also explain how Hakon and Malik’s ancestors could be playing poker together

at Drake’s Lair even though Severn’s cousin co-owned it with Storm’s husband Pierce.

So instead of secret societies maybe they were organized along family lines, which

fell in with the talk of ancestors and her earlier thought about tongs. Sophie grinned.

Maybe they even referred to themselves as being members of a certain lair.

The buzz in her veins told her she was on the right track. It explained so much,

including why Severn’s family had been after the Dragon’s Cup for hundreds of years.

Maybe the cup was kind of like the Holy Grail, the supreme prize in their competition.

Why they all stayed with it and seemed to take it seriously was a bit beyond her at

the moment, but still… She frowned as she suddenly remembered the conversation she’

d had with Severn as they were leaving the room where the chalice had been stolen.

Do you want children?

Yes. And you will be their mother.

Not right away.

Not until we find the Dragon’s Cup.

A tendril of uneasiness began threading its way through Sophie’s excitement at

having unraveled the mystery of the dragon tattoos. She’d been happy to let the subject

of children drop. She’d ultimately translated “not until we find the Dragon’s Cup” to

“after we’ve gotten to know each other better and had plenty of time to ourselves.” But

Xanthus’ presence proved it was a mistake to make those kinds of assumptions when it

came to Severn.

He couldn’t mean it literally, could he? He couldn’t believe the cup was important

when it came to having children in the same way VanDenbergh had thought it would

give him a hard-on that would allow him to satisfy six women all by himself.

Sophie grimaced. As much as
